How was Jesus able to walk on water?
Asked by Nick
Jesus, The Son of God Walks On Water
Key Scripture: Immediately, Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away. And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there. But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary. Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.” And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat the wind ceased. Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.” (Matthew 14:22-33)
Fact:
The disciples realized Jesus was the Son of God and worshiped Him.
Nick this is a good question, “How did Jesus walk on water?” But before we answer this question, we need to ask another question. “Who is Jesus Christ?” If we know who Jesus Christ is, then we can get a good hint of how He walked on the water.
Who did the disciples think Jesus was?
After Jesus walked on the water and the wind ceased the disciples clearly understood that Jesus was truly the Son of God and worshiped Him.
In the very first chapter and first verse of the Gospel of John we find out who Jesus is. The Apostle John calls Jesus the “Word.” John writes, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
Jesus is God and the Creator of everything. John writes in the third verse, “All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.”
So, Nick, back to your question.
If Jesus made “All things” that means He made the Sea, and since He made the Sea, I am sure he could walk on it with no problem. Remember He is God.
A little further down in verse 14 John writes, “And the Word (Jesus Christ – The Son of God) became flesh and dwelt among us . . ." Jesus became flesh meaning he became like us, fully man, but also fully God.
Jesus (God) came into the world He created and gave His life on the cross dying for our sins that we could be forgiven.
In verse twelve John writes, “But as many as received Him (Jesus), to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name . . ."
So, Nick, I hope this helped. Jesus being God could easily walk on the water.
